The Ministry of Health announced the results of the national healthcare system’s (ESY) hospital reviews that have recently been conducted. The reviews conducted by the Ministry’s special advisers focused on a range hospital expenses and the overall patient experience and healthcare provided.

The top hospitals include the “Papageorgiou” in Thessaloniki, the General State Hospital of Nikea, the “Sotiria”, the “Evangelismos”, the “Sismanoglio”, the “Venizelio-Pananio” in Iraklio, the “Alexandra”, the “Ippokratio”, the Panarcadic Hospital in Tripoli and the Red Cross hospital.

The top regional hospitals include the “Achilopoulio” in Volos, the “Gennimatas” in Thessaloniki, the “Hatzikosta” in Ioannina, the General Hospitals of Kalamata, Karditsa, Serres and Katerini, the “Vostanio” in Mytilene, the “Konstantopoulio” in Nea Ionia and the “Agios Andreas” in Patra. The most efficient “small” hospitals (with up to 250 beds) include the General Hospitals of Veria, Didymoteicho, Drama, Kerkyra and Corinth.

The hospitals at the bottom of the Health Ministry’s list are the “KAT”, the “Papanikolaou” in Thessaloniki, the “Mamatsio” in Kozani, the “Koultibanio” in Kozani, the “Andreas Papandreou” in Rhodes, as well as the hospitals of Aegio, Livadia, Thiva, and Halkida.

The Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis commented that all hospitals had achieved their goals and admitted that further work in necessary so that certain hospitals can overcome their inefficiencies.

The Ministry’s report also showed that there was a 1.46% drop in the number of hospitalized patients since 2013 and a 7.68% in the admission of patients in emergency clinics. The data also show that there was slight increase of outpatient clinic visits.
