The police department of Itea was targeted by the Conspiracy of Fire Cells militant group last week in a failed mail bomb attack. According to the police report genetic material found in the bomb was matched with that of escaped 17 November member Christodoulos Xiros.

In a statement released online, the militant urban guerilla group claimed to have targeted the particular police department as it believed that Albanian prisoner Ilie Kareli was tortured there prior to his death in Nigrita.

The bomb itself was disguised as a book of psalms and contained about half a kilo of TNT as well as nails and screws. The bomb was delivered via post to the department on the 29th of April and was addressed to the department’s commander, with the Archiocese NGO appearing to be the sender.
