The Greek version of Google featured a doodle commemorating the 216th anniversary of the birth of Dionysios Solomos, the poet who composed the Hymn to Liberty, the first two stanzas of which eventually became the Greek national anthem.

The doodle depicts a blond woman, floating over the sea under the moonlight, in reference to a character in Solomos’ seminal poem The Cretan, which he composed in his later, more mature years. The Cretan is inspired by the Cretan Revolution and tells the story of Cretan castaway who tries to save his fiancé from the wild sea.

In his struggle with the waves, the hero comes across a moonlit div, which turns out to be the soul of his soon-to-perish fiancé. The poem concludes with the hero of coming to terms with fate and looking forward to meeting her again during the second coming.

Other notable works of the national poet include The Free Besieged and The Whale.
