The celebrations for the War of Independence have begun in Athens with the student march in the city center taking place today, while the military parade is scheduled to begin at 11am on the 25th of March.
The police have announced a series of tight security measures during the marches, with the Metro station at Syntagma remaining shut since the morning. About 2,000 to 3,000 police officers will be deployed in the city center during the marches. The public will be able to watch the parade up close from Voukourestiou Street onwards.
A number of changes to bus, trolley and Metro services have been introduced, while the traffic police announced that road access to the city center will be limited and will gradually be cut off.
Unfortunately journalists and photographers who had received clearance from the Municipality of Athens to cover the student marches today were not allowed to approach the VIP area of the march, due to the police not having received the relevant list.
