Two cases of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, better known as “mad cow disease” were reported in Fthiotida and confirmed by the National Veterinary Report Laboratory based in Larissa. The last case of “mad cow disease” had been reported in Kilkis, back in 2001.

The Ministry of Agricultural Development did not appear concerned since the two animals, were imported from Holland. One of the two cows gave even birth, with the authorities having located and seized the offspring.

In response to the two reported cases, the General Directorate of Veterinary of the Ministry of Agricultural Development announced a series of measures provided by EU legislation, such as the immediate ban on imports and exports of the affected animals and products, informing farmers and implicated bodies and increasing inspections in abattoirs to ensure that safe practices are observed.
