The president of the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce (ESEE) Vasilis Korkidis has slammed the government’s intention to deregulate commercial lease.

Mr. Korkidis expressed his frustration at the three-year lease proposal since tax legislation provides that the payback period for an investment is five years. As such, Mr. Korkidis believes that leases should be designed with consistent business owners in mind. ESEE has proposed a six year duration for commercial leases, arguing that it is generous reduction from the old, 12-year leases.

Furthermore, the confederation is considering establishing a friendly settlement service, based on the principle of Intermediation and will request from the Ministry of Growth’s General Secretary of Trade to support regional committees in order to help solve the problems that will stem from the changes to commercial leases.
