The European statistics authority Eurostat has announced that according to its latest set of divs, the rate of unemployment in Greece during October 2013 climbed to 27.8% from the 27.7% rate in September. Overall the rate of unemployment in the Eurozone between October and December 2013 remained stable at 12%, while the rate of unemployment during December in the EU dropped to 10.7%, from 10.8% in November.

In absolute numbers, for December 2013, Eurostat documented 26.2 million unemployed in the EU and 19.01 million euros in the Eurozone. Compared to November 2013, there were 162,000 fewer unemployed in the EU and 129,000 fewer unemployed in the Eurozone.

The highest rate of unemployment in the EU was documented in Greece (27.8% in October), Spain (25.8%), Croatia (18.6%) and Cyprus (17.5%), while the lowest rates were documented in Austria (4.9%), Germany (5.1%) and Luxembourg (6.2%). The greatest increase of unemployment within a year were documented in Cyprus (13.9% to 17.5%) and Greece (26.1% in October 2012 to 27.8% in October 2013).

Eurostat’s data shows that there were 1.388 million unemployed in Greece during October, with the rate of unemployment affecting women harder than men (32.1% compared to 24.7%). Greece also has the highest rate of youth unemployment (59.2% in October), followed by Spain (54.3%) and Croatia (49.2%).

The lowest rates of youth employment were documented in Germany (7.4%), Austria (8.9%) and the Netherlands (11.3%). Overall, in December youth unemployment in the EU dropped to 23.2% (from 23.4% in November), while in the Eurozone the rate dropped to 23.8% from 24%.
