The government Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs Evangelos Venizelos addressed the naming dispute with FYROM in Parliament and claimed that the former Yugoslav republic was not respecting international law.

Mr. Venizelos argued that FYROM “has no goodwill intentions to participate in talks, does not respect international law and does not respect the moderate, creative and responsible stance of the Greek side”.

The VP explained that Greece is willing to accept an erga omnes composite name that includes the term “Macedonia” provided it includes a geographical qualifier that would distinguish the country from Greek Macedonia.

Mr. Venizelos was prompted to address the matter in Parliament by ANEL president Panos Kammenos, who claimed that Greece is essentially conceding to FYROM’s claims and argued that Greece should appeal to the international courts in Hague since FYROM broke the bilateral agreement.

Mr. Kammenos also urged the government to hold a referendum for the matter.
