The Felony Appeal Court of Thessaloniki will begin examining the appeal launched by the city’s former mayor Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, who was convicted for the embezzlement of 18 million euros from municipal funds.

The former mayor of Thessaloniki, former general secretary Michalis Lemousias and former municipal treasurer Panagiotis Saxonis were convicted to life imprisonment in February 2013, while two former directors were given 15 and 10 year prison sentences for their implication.

Since his incarceration Mr. Papageorgopoulos has written a number of open letters, protesting his innocence and claiming he was not involved in the embezzlement.
