A short-circuit appears to be the cause of a fire that broke out in the basement of the “Metaxas” hospital in Piraeus at about 2:30 in the afternoon on Sunday.

The fire damaged hospital consumables and while some patients and staff members had to be transferred to other hospital wings due to the smoke, there were no injuries reported.

An investigation was ordered to determine the cause of the fire, but the Fire Brigade was unable to locate any evidence to suggest foul play, thus attributing the fire to a potential short-circuit of a machine in the basement.

Although the Fire Brigade quickly set the fire under control, a few vehicles were stationed outside the hospital, to avoid the possibility of the fire restarting.
