The Ministry of Education is considering a proposal to shut schools down for an additional two days following Clean Monday in early March, in order to support the hoteliers’ proposal for a “white week” of winter tourism.

The hoteliers initially requested that schools shut down for three days (between the 4th and 7th of March), in order to support winter and spring tourism. Clean Monday, which signals the start of the Lent leading up to Easter in Eastern Orthodox traditions, is a national holiday in Greece.

Officials from the Ministry of Education have clarified that in case the proposal is accepted after all, then the two days of teaching would be covered by reducing the number of planned excursions.
