Yesterday’s armed attack against the residence of the German ambassador in Halandri has caused great concern amongst government officials over the repercussions a resurgence of domestic terrorism might have on Greece, as the country prepares to assume leadership of the EU.

The Prime Minister Antonis Samaras contacted his German counterpart Angela Merkel to inform her that his government is determined to tackle the latest bout of terrorism. Similarly Vice President Evangelos Venizelos updated the German Foreign Affairs Minister Steinmeier on the progress of the police investigation.

The government estimates that the terrorists’ intention was to harm Greece’s status and create an air of insecurity and destabilization as the country prepares to assume EU leadership and attract investors. This was reflected in the Prime Minister’s speech, who noted that “the terrorists do not care about Greece”.

Government and police officials note that the attack against the ambassador’s residence could be the start of a new wave of terrorist activity in Greece. This will unavoidably have political repercussions on Greece’s global standing, despite government assurances of tackling the issue.

Security measures will increase and become more intense, with the first “test” being conducted next week for the College of Commissioners that will take place in Greece for the official commencement of the Greek EU presidency.
