Ministry of Finances sets “hidden income” in its sights
According to a report by Ta Nea, the Ministry of Finances is planning to combat tax evasion by implementing a series of technical audits that will help locate and identify the “hidden income” of freelancers and tradesmen.
The General Secretary of Public Revenue Haris Theoharis signed the relevant decree on Christmas Eve, which will authorize the Ministry’s auditing services of carrying out the necessary investigations.
As such, the Ministry’s services will be examining bank accounts, loans, credit cards, real estate assets and transactions, insurance policies, donations and other property related to the expenses and income of tax payers.
The goal is to determine the “true” income of taxpayers in recent years, compared to what they have been paying taxes for. The Ministry is also working on stringent fines for those found guilty of tax evasion.
