Nigerian pirates abduct Greek mechanic off the coast of Guinea

Pirates attacked the “Althea” about 35 miles south of Guinea, Nigeria and Cameroon and have abducted the ship’s 65-year-old Greek first mechanic along with the Ukrainian captain.

Based on the latest reports it appears that a group of 10 Nigerian pirates launched the assault on the tanker with an 18-man crew and after abducting the two, disappeared. The “Althea” was transporting oil locally at the time and is currently anchored in a safe area.

The family of the abducted mechanic has been informed of this development, while the authorities are conducting an investigation to locate and rescue him. Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Shipping are constantly updated by the Coast Guard. It is believed that the pirates will contact the ship-owning company and demand ransom for the release of the two men.
