The Senate of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens will convene today in order to discuss the Ministry of Education’s request to suspend the University’s Rector Theodosis Pelegrinis until he is referred to the Disciplinary Council. It is highly unlikely that the Senate will approve the Ministry’s request.

Later in the day the Rector will deliver a speech at an event on the attack against public higher education and “government politics, goals and their means of imposition”. The event is scheduled to take place at the University of Athens.

The NKUA administrative employees will convene today, with the majority faction in their union demanding a vote on whether the open the university and to continue negotiations with the Ministry of Education. The administrative employees at the National Technical University of Athens will also convene today.

The union announced that “no administrative employee colleague is blocking entrance to any area in our University, therefore faculty members and students are free to attend their academic duties as they wish”.

The union of the Medical School’s teaching staff submitted a proposal asking for the universities to open with the strikers appointing security personnel, so that first year students can enroll, registration can continue and faculty members are allowed access to their working areas.

Students occupy University of Thessaloniki’s Rector Officers

Meanwhile a group of Psychology students have occupied the Rector’s office at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in protest of the suspension measure. According to the thesstoday.gr website, the students – who appear to belong to a leftist student union – argued with administrative employees who were against the occupation. The administrative employees in Thessaloniki continue with their three-hour walkouts until Friday.
