Smoking ban inspections to increase ahead of holidays

The Ministry of Health has decided to increase the inspections for a smoking ban in enclosed spaces, which was introduced in July 2009 during the upcoming holiday seasons, with smokers who violate the ban being liable for fines up to 500 euros.

Business owners however will face even stricter fines, which range from 500 to 10,000 euros, depending on the degree of the offense. The Ministry will also consider whether “no smoking” signs are clearly visible, whether there are ashtrays on customer tables and if the relevant paperwork is up to date.
