The disgraced former Mayor of Thessaloniki Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, who earlier in the year was sentenced to life imprisonment for his implication in the embezzlement of funds from municipal treasury, has issued another written statement where he dubbed himself a “scapegoat”.

Mr. Papageorgopoulos referred to his imprisonment as “an unfair taint of his name” and “unjust deprivation of on year of life” and argued that the case against him was “full of holes” since the embezzlement had begun prior to his election in office.
