Despite being regarded as one of the most important public hospitals in the country, the Evangelismos Hospital has used up a significant chunk of its annual budget and is desperately trying to secure funding.

With the majority of public hospitals in Athens having gone through about 90% to 95% of their budgets, the Evangelismos management is tasked with finding 16 million euros to cover operating costs (about 8 million euros for each month) and a further 6 million euros to cover outstanding debts.

The Ministry of Health has apparently approved a 3.5 million euro emergency grant, of which 1 million euros is intended for the hospital pharmacy. The Ministry is trying to secure funds for the hospital, but with most hospitals facing similar cash flow problems, the situation could get worse.

Due to its dire financial condition the Evangelismos the head of the hospital’s Hematology Lab issued a statement explaining that they have run out reagents, which in turn means that the hospital is unable to perform a series of important diagnostics and laboratory tests.
