Twelve immigrants, including four children aged 3 to 6, tragically lost their loves when their ship capsized early on Friday morning, off the coast of Lefkada, in the Paleros area in Aetoloakarnania.

The immigrants contacted the Coast Guard via mobile phone at around 7.30am to inform them that their ship was in danger, with a rescue operation launched soon after. Police officers located 15 survivors on the shore, who have been taken to the hospitals in Lefkada and Preveza for medical attention, and assisted the Coast Guard in recovering the bodies of the 12 deceased immigrants.

The police suspect that the immigrants are from refugees from Syria and estimate that their ship capsized due to a sudden shift in weight, given that the weather in the area were very calm at the time of the incident. The investigation into the traffickers has revealed that the ship was stolen.
