After the Ministry of Education granted multiple extensions to its deadline, a total of 1,700 administrative employees registered their details online for review. As announced previously, employees who did not register will face disciplinary action and suspension.

While the Ministry originally extended its deadline to midnight on Tuesday and then 2pm on Wednesday, it extended the deadline yet again until 8 in the evening. This time the Ministry claimed its website received many “hits”, suggesting that employees were wanting to register.

The administrative employees were holding out until the very last moment in order see if a relevant act was voted in Parliament, which was to allow the Ministry of Education to suspend anyone who has not registered their details.

At the University of Athens the administrative employees decided not to register and continue with their strike until Friday as planned. The university’s general secretary Dimitris Sakatos urged employees to observe the law.

Meanwhile the Minister of Education Arvanitopoulos denied rumors that additional categories of university employees, such as teaching staff, will face suspension.
