The Appeal Court of Kalamata has made the headlines with the harsh sentences of four men, who were implicated in a false invoice and tax evasion ring.

According to the local Eleftheria newspaper, three of the men were sentenced to life imprisonment and the fourth to 20 years. A fifth man who was accused of participating in the gang was found innocent. The invoices had a face value of 8.5 million euros.

The gang was exposed about two years ago when SDOE agents located two men from Athens and another one from Thessaloniki trading in falsified invoices for agricultural goods in Messinia. Farmers would use these falsified invoices to receive VAT returns.
