Police and protesters clashed yesterday during the huge rally against fascism and Golden Dawn. The thousands of protesters marched from Syntagma and were headed towards Golden Dawn’s offices on Mesogion Avenue, where riot police units had been deployed.
The protesters approached the Golden Dawn offices at around 8pm and began negotiating with the police in order to continue with their protest. A group of protesters demanded to be allowed to continue with their march to the offices of public broadcasting service DT, which are opposite of Golden Dawn’s offices.
Agitated protesters began chanted slogans against Golden Dawn, fascism and the police and shortly afterwards, at around 8:15pm, the Police and protesters clashed. A group of protesters set fire to trash cans and attacked the police with rocks and Molotov cocktails, while the riot police responded with flash bang grenades and tear gas.
The clashes lasted about half an hour, with the Police managing to push the rioting protesters towards the city center. The police reported that it detained 62 people and arrested 5 others.
