Opposition leaders SYRIZA appear to be disappointed from the results of the recent elections held in Germany, where Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party dominated while Die Linke lost about a quarter of its seats.

SYRIZA’s central committee issued a conflicting statement regarding the elections and Die Linke. On the one hand SYRIZA recognizes the “harsh” political climate and challenges faced by Die Linke and on the other it downplay Merkel’s resounding victory by stating that “it would be difficult to claim that her politics were as popular”.

Alexis Tsipras’ party focused on the defeat of the CDU’s coalition partners of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the rise of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) euro-skeptic party. The opposition attributes these changes to the German electorate not being convinced by Mrs. Merkel’s politics.
