The Minister of Public Order Nikos Dendias and the Chief of Greek Police Nikos Papagiannopoulos have decided to appoint the police’s counter-terrorism agency to investigate cases where Golden Dawn members and supporters are implicated.

Furthermore, the Minister of Public Order and Chief of Police have agreed to withdraw police guards appointed to Golden Dawn MPs, until the Supreme Court Prosecutor determines whether Golden Dawn members and supporters are involved in criminal activity.

In their announcement they explain that based on recent developments, the allocation of police escorts to MPs of Golden Dawn is incompatible, both legally and institutionally to the Greek Police’s duties to uphold the rule of law and parliament.

Golden Dawn MPs may still apply for a police escort, however the General Directorate of VIP Security will decide whether to allocate a security detail on a case-by-case basis.
