The leader of the Opposition in Parliament Alexis Tsipras headed for Germany today for a two-day visit. Mr. Tsipras is scheduled to meet with a number of German officials, including Jörg Asmussen and the Die Linke party.

Mr. Tsipras is scheduled to speak at an election rally of the German leftist party Die Linke, however the recent dismissive comments of the party’s co-chairman Bernd Riexinger regarding the Occupation loan claims have troubled him. This development could complicate Mr. Tsipras efforts to garner support from the left.

The meeting with Jörg Asmussen is perhaps more interesting though, since it demonstrates the troika willingness to open channels of communication with SYRIZA. This follows with Mr. Tsipras recent references to achieving a primary surplus and supporting liquidity in the economy indicating a willingness to further negotiate.

On Friday the SYRIZA leader is scheduled to visit Vienna, where he will meet the head of the Austrian Communist Party Mirko Messner, as well as the Vice-Mayor of Vienna Maria Vasilakou. Mr. Tsipras will also speak at the Bruno Kreisky Foundation.
