Opposition leader Alexis Tsipras met with Chairman of Federation Council Matviyenko who is currently in Athens, and discussed bilateral and regional matters. According to sources of the Athens News Agency, Mr. Tsipras will visit Moscow in October.

Mr. Tsipras expressed his intention to further develop Greek-Russian relations, a position which was also echoed by Mrs. Matviyenko. The SYRIZA leader explained that his party has a different approach to the privatizations matter, but noted that he was open to transnational synergies that could encourage growth and bilateral cooperation.

Mr. Tsipras explained that in that respect his party has not and will not base its relations with Russia based on the positions expressed by third parties, such as the EU. Greece is and will remain a member of the EU, but that does not mean that the country will negotiated with partners or ask for permission to cooperate with out countries.
