The Greek national basketball team followed up its victory against Sweden by defeating Russia (80-71), for the group stage of the 2013 EuroBasket competition taking place in Slovenia.

Once again coach Andrea Trinchieri’s side had a shaky start, allowing the Russian team to take the lead in the first quarter (16-21). In the second and third quarters however the Greek team had some spectacular plays and quickly took the lead.

Vasilis Spanoulis and Kostas Kaimakoglou were the leading scorers for Greece, with 11 points each, whereas Russia’s Alexey Shved scored 17 points.

Spanoulis sprained his ankle during the game and is unlikely to be ready for the next game, against Turkey. Greece has the day off on Friday and will face Turkey on Saturday, Italy on Sunday and Finland on Monday.
