The Deputy Minister of Finances Christos Staikouras announced that since the January 2013, the State has managed to pay out about 4.3 billion euros of outstanding debt.

The bureaucracy at the Ministries and their bodies appears to hamper the pay out, since the Ministry has approved 5.7 billion euros worth of payouts, but only 4.3 billion euros were paid out by the end of August.

In its announcement, the Ministry detailed that in the past eight months it has paid out 18,342 lump sums to public sector pensioners, 91% of its funding for the Army Pension Fund and Military Hospitals and 84% of its funding towards ESY Hospitals.

The government’s commitment is to avoid accumulating any further new debt and to pay out 8 billion euros worth of outstanding debt by the end of the year.
