A 72-year-old German man was arrested by the Police two days ago, on spy charges. The 72-year-old was caught taking pictures of military installations and public buildings on Chios, which he sold to Turkish agents for 500 to 1,500 euros.

According to the Police investigation, the 72-year-old moved from Bonn, Germany to Izmir and Marmara in Turkey about ten years ago, after his wife passed away. The German claims that about four years he decided to move to Greece, for health and insurance purposes, and was approached by a group of people he was familiar with to take pictures of military installations in Chios.

The Greek Police is not entirely convinced by the explanations provided and suspect that the German came to Greece specifically to perform the spying objectives given to him by the Turkish police or secret service. Local residents have reported that contrary to most northern and central European expatriates living on Chios pursue contact with locals and participate in local events, the 72-year-old German was isolated.
