ERGOSE has announced that the Othrios railway tunnel project has recommenced, after being shut down due to legal issues. The project began in 2007 and is part of an overhaul of the Greek railway network.

According to the firm, about 150 people are involved in the construction. Successful bidder company Aktor has a budget of 209 million euros. The project is split in two sections, the ‘indoor’ and ‘outdoors’.

The ‘indoor’ section, which is about 80% complete, involves carving a double tunnel of 6.5 kilometers in each direction in the Othrios Mountain. About 1.1 kilometers of digging per tunnel are left, which are expected to be complete in December 2014. The ‘outdoor’ section, which includes the building of bridges and other support work, is complete by 85%. This second section is expected to be ready by this December.
