The Fire Brigade managed to extinguish a fire that broke out earlier in the day near the thermoelectric power plant near Meliti in Florina. A vehicle and group of firefighters are still on site on guard.

The fire started on the conveyor belt carrying lignite and quickly spread all over the facilities. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, so mechanics and other experts are arriving to examine the site.

Damages are extensive and as all conveyor belts destroyed, it is not yet known when the thermoelectric plant will be able to resume operations. The power plant’s operation was environmentally friendly and actively reduced the pollution created by older regional power plants.

The deputy regional commissioner Dimitris Iliadis reported that thankfully nobody was injured and stood behind the demand of Florina unionists of hiring experienced and properly-trained full-time staff, rather than untrained seasonal employees.
