The Mayor of Athens Giorgos Kaminis has condemned the leadership of the local government employee union POE-OTA, after he was attacked outside the offices of the Central Union of Municipalities (KEDE).

Mr. Kaminis was invited to speak on SKAI TV’s morning chat show and claimed that the POE-OTA president Themis Balasopoulos instigated the assault and has publicly targeted him.

The Mayor also claimed that the Municipal Police must be upgraded and become more like the Geek Police, while adding the evaluations are necessary to improve municipal services.

Municipalities on strike

KEDE’s leadership is scheduled today to meet with the Minister of Internal Affairs Mihelakis and the Minister of Adminstrative Reform Mitsotakis today. According to the government’s mobility program, more than 50% of civil servants to be inducted will come from municipal services.

KEDE’s board decided that aside from the social and welfare services, Municipalities will be closed on Monday in response to the mobility program. POE-OTA and private sector union ADEDY have announced a walkout at noon and demonstration at Karaiskaki Square at 12:30.

POE-OTA issued a statement accusing the Minister of Administrative Reform of making unacceptable and derogatory remarks about municipal employees “like a Gauleiter”. The Minister has denied making any such allegations.
