How Mitsotakis will tackle suspension of 12,500 civil servants
The newly-appointed Minister of Administrative Reform Kyriakos Mitsotakis has started off in the “deep end”, as he has to prepare for the upcoming negotiations with the troika representatives over the next few days.
Mr. Mitsotakis’ main bargaining chip will be the dismissal of the 2656 ERT employees, as a token of the government’s determination to see through a number of reforms. His main problem is securing an extension for the ambitious suspension of 12,500 civil servants. The Minister stated on Tuesday that the goal for securing the extension is dependent on the troika evaluation on other matters.
A Ministry official outlined Mr. Mitsotakis’ arguments in favor of an extension. The Minister will claim that the government has the resolve to dismiss civil servants, as in the case of ERT. Additionally the newly-appointed Minister needs time to be informed and updated on the current, mobility, restructuring and evaluation plans, in order to be able to make the necessary decisions.
