A 37-year-old Police Sergeant from the Police Department of Livadia was shot dead by suspected escapees from Trikala prison, at about 2am on Monday. The suspects escaped in an unmarked police vehicle.

According the Police report, the police officers set up a roadblock at around 2am in the Desfina area, after being informed of a suspicious group heading to Distomo on foot.

An unmarked police vehicle with three officers onboard approached the area. While parked, five heavily-armed men suddenly came out of hiding and took their equipment (three bulletproof vests, three pistols and a G3A3 assault rifle).

A second unmarked police vehicle arrived later, with one of the suspects opening fire and injuring of the two officers in the leg. The 37-year-old police sergeant was rushed to the Livadia hospital with profuse bleeding, but it was too late.

Police forces are combing the area with the support of EKAM, OPKE and DIAS units in order to locate and apprehend the suspects.
