ELSTAT has published its latest data on employment, according to which there were 3,595,921 employed and 1,355,237 unemployed and in the first trimester of 2013. The unemployment rate was estimated to be 27.4%, compared to 26% during the previous trimester and 22.6% a year ago.
The statistics authority’s data indicate that employment was reduced by 2.3% compared to last trimester and 6.3% compared to last year. The number of unemployed grew by 4.6% compared to last trimester and 21% overall in the last year.
Unemployment affects women to a greater extent than men (31% compared to 24.7%), however people aged 15-24 comprise the most vulnerable group, where unemployment was estimated to be 60%. Unemployment for young women reached 66.3%.
According to ELSTAT’s data 42.9% of unemployed never went to school, 33.4% completed secondary education, while an estimated 15.3% have a post-graduate or doctoral degree.
