SYRIZA has published its proposal for a bill to tackle racism and xenophobia which it has submitted in Parliament.

In the proposal a racist crime is defined as any criminal act against a person or group of people due to their national or ethnic origin, race, color, religious beliefs, disability, gender or sexual orientation. The proposal also makes provisions from actions and behavior that threaten legal rights and not ideas, theories and opinions.

Sentencing will entail a deprivation of political rights, with a number of harsh penalties for private companies and unions. SYRIZA has also proposed the formation of a National Committee for Coordination and Combating Racism under the Minister of Justice and to establish a nation-wide network to document racist crimes.
