The Deputy Minister of Finances Giorgos Mavraganis revealed that at a recent meeting of representatives from all government partners, the possibility of excluding professional farmers from the taxation of fields was discussed.

This move would generate a 200 million euro deficit, which could be covered in a variety of ways, such as tracking down undeclared illegal dwellings and taxing their owners.

The matter will be discussed at the meeting of the party committee with the leadership of the Ministry of Finances next Tuesday, when the final decisions on the new land tax of 2014 will be made.

The government is hoping to generate 3.1 billion euros in taxes from land, with about 800 million euros expected to derive from fields. If professional farmers are to be excluded, a 150-200 million euro deficit will need to be covered.
