The General Secretary of Public Revenue Haris Theoharis explained on a Mega TV morning chat show that tax payers will have to declare their interest generated from bank savings, if the sum of interest earned from all bank accounts is over 250 euros.

Mr. Theoharis also explained that this measure excludes about 90% of taxpayers, since they do not have wages high enough to have generated that much from interest. The secretary claimed that the Ministry of Finances is trying to acquire the information directly from the banks, so that it is automatically filled out in the tax returns. Until that happens though, tax payers must request the information from banks themselves.

When asked about bank accounts that have more than one beneficiary, Mr. Theoharis replied that the taxpayers must decide who will declare the interests. The General Secretary also mentioned that 12,000 tax payers have filed their returns so far and claimed that employees and pensioners will pay less tax compared to last year.
