The teacher union OLME decided to cancel the controversial strike that was to begin on the first day of Panhellenic exams, despite the government’s order of a civil mobilization.

The teachers are expected to hold a demonstration in downtown Athens on Friday and are examining their options. The OLME board of directors will finish its talks with the political parties next week before reevaluating the situation.

After last night’s marathon session, the majority of OLME’s board (DAKE, PASKE and SYRIZA’s Paremvasi) decided against the strike. There were 18 votes in favor of a strike, 9 against and 57 blank votes, meaning that there was not there wasn’t the necessary majority for the strike to happen.

OLME’s board of directors are likely to convene again today and issue an announcement regarding last night’s vote.
