The proposed legislation for dealing with racism and xenophobia has been postponed. The Minister of State Dimitris Stamatis and the government’s general secretary Takis Baltakos deemed it was necessary to further discuss the bill before moving on to vote. The main government argument is that more time is required to discuss the matters at hand, in order to avoid any possible problems.

As revealed in the Sunday print edition of “Vima”, the new legislation on racism and xenophobia will target particular parties and attitudes in Parliament, while setting out the consequences for such attitudes. Those found guilty of racially-motivated violence will face serious penalties, particularly if they are politicians.
