Golden Dawn’s decision to distribute food and other necessities to “Greeks only” on Syntagma Square this morning was the cause of some commotion. Party members and MPs Kasidiaris, Panagiotaros and Lagos reacted intently when police would not allow their truck to unload the good near the “Grande Bretagne” hotel. Golden Dawn MP Giorgos Germenis tried to punch Mayor Kaminis, but missed and hit a 12-year-old girl!

Riot police were in the area early on this morning, since the Mayor of Athens Giorgos Kaminis announced that he would not allow “food banks of hate” which “provoke every democratic citizen”. The three MPs managed to unload some of the groceries to hand out to people who had queued up early on. The police attempted to interrupt the distribution, causing commotion. Two more trucks with groceries are expected.

The riot police intervened with limited use of chemicals and warned the crowd that they would detain the Golden Dawn members and MPs. Eventually the truck headed off towards the party’s offices near Larisis Station, where the distribution will continue. The Police are investigating the cause of the incident and those responsible.

Kaminis comments on SKAI

The Mayor spoke to SKAI and explained that “Golden Dawn did not ask for a permit, we told them we would not allow [the food bank], so the distribution did not take place. The bullying mentality is worthless here”. Mr. Kaminis also added that the Municipality of Athens hands out 9,000 meals on a daily basis “but we don’t make a fuss about it. We do not stage shows on squares. Solidarity is one thing, theatrical plays another”.
