Dozens of friends, relatives and comrades of Alekos Panagoulis gathered at noon today at the First Cemetery of Athens to honor his memory. Panagoulis was one of the most emblematic divs of the resistance against the military junta that ruled Greece.

Panagoulis became a well-known div when he participated in a failed attempt to assassinate the dictator Papadopoulos in 1968, after which he was captured and imprisoned. Panagoulis was tragically killed on May Day of 1976 in an ambiguous accident on Vouliagmenis Avenue, which has not yet been resolved to this day.

Alekos Panagoulis’ brother Stathis, who is also an MP with SYRIZA, commented that “our people are called upon once more to fight for social justice, without which there is no democracy”.

Amongst those attending the remembrance service were SYRIZA MP Nasos Athanasiou, the widow of resistance fighter Spyros Moustaklis and prison guard Giorgos Morakis, who helped him escape prison in 1969.
