The “Arktouros” environmental organization is calling for donations, in order to continue operating the Center for Reproduction and Popularization of the Greek Sheepdog in Agrapidia near Florina.
The “Arktouros” Sheepdog center is important because it helps the dogs reproduce and develop. The environmental organization has given away over 500 Greek sheepdogs to farmers in mountainous regions, where there is a significant presence of bears and wolves. The sheepdogs have proven to be reliable guards against attacks.
In order to afford to carry on giving away puppies and fighting for the official recognition of the breed by the World Canine Organization (FCI), the Arktouros charity needs financial support. For that purpose, they are seeking sponsors for the eleven Sheepdogs they have on site, for 100 euros a year.
The Greek sheepdog is one of two original breeds of dog that are still around. At present there are very few pure-bred Sheepdogs, making the preservation efforts all the more important.
