The Ministry of Growth’s press office attempted to deny rumors that the Minister referred to a hike in ticket prices, when he spoke of “reevaluating the current price policy of the urban transport within the first half of 2013”. The ministry claims that “no increase of tickets and cards are insinuated”, stating that reevaluation will take place in October.
The question arose when New Democracy MP Ch. Dimas posed a question in parliament, regarding the problems experienced by travelers on the suburban rail service of Kiato-Airport-Piraeus. Mr. Hatzidakis replied that the reevaluation of current price policy will “take into consideration the country’s fiscal situation, the needs of the transport bodies in order to be sustainable”.
The ministry later issued its announcement to clarify that this does not mean a price hike is immanent, as they “will examining with the firm managements the necessary actions required in order to coordinate”. The ministry also “stresses the efforts against ticket evasion and further improving the transport firms, so that price hikes are ultimately avoided”.
