On Tuesday the Minister of Administrative Reform Antonis Manitakis met with the Commissioner of Public Administration Leandros Rakintzis, to discuss fast-tracking disciplinary procedures, in order to combat corruption.

It was decided that the Inspector would cooperate to a greater extent on issues of disciplinary control, in order to locate and remove disparaging civil servants. They also discussed setting up a control system to regulate instances of mass acquittals. Over the next few days ministry executives will cooperate with the inspector in order to combat corruption.

The Troika still demands public sector lay offs, disputing the efficiency of current measures of transfers, mergers and service evaluations that are meant to reduce costs and staff. Disciplinary committees cannot yet to operate since their formation requires a ministerial decree.

Ministries have documented 892 cases of disciplinary offenses and criminal liability, with the implicated employees automatically suspended. The government feels that general opinion will be positive about the lay off of such employees.
