Social democrat candidate Peer Steinbrück will visit Athens on Wednesday, as part of his European tour. Mr. Steinbrück will meet with President Karolos Papoulias, Minister of Finances Giannis Stournaras and PASOK president Evangelos Venizelos.
The SDP candidate also condemned the German government and Brussels’ apathy that lead to continued attacks on the Eurozone. In an interview for “Spiegel” regarding his visits, the SDP candidate insists upon the EU being a de facto “union of responsibility” and that Germany will eventually have to pay, despite Angela Merkel’s wishes “who didn’t want to pay a single cent to Greece and will now have to tell the citizens the truth”.
Despite the positive developments in the rate bonds in the South and the improvement of Greek number, Mr. Steinbrück is cautious. Mr. Steinbrück was Minister of Finances in the first Merkel government and insists that recovery would occur sooner, if Merkel and other strong players in Brussels had agreed upon a clear commitment in support of Greek bonds.
