The Municipality of Lavreotiki’s proposal regarding the location of a waste management plant on environmental terms has been approved by Parliament. The plant will be built at Fovoles, at the old landfill site, rather than Vragoni (Ovriokastro). The project can be handled by ESDNA or the municipality.

Mayor of Lavreotiki Kostas Levantis expressed his satisfaction as “after 17 years [of struggle] and 128 days on the road blocks, we managed to pass our proposals. It’s the first step. Now we need to work together with Attica Periphery to materialize our proposal”.

New Democracy MP Giorgos Vlachos stressed that the citizens of Keratea have found justice, while St. Kalafatis pointed out that Keratea demonstrates the effective cooperation of central and local government, through “mature dialog and the citizens’ willingness to leave past tensions behind them”. An extension for the issuing of relevant licenses was also voted, as the changes in legislation, procedures and operation of Planning Service have caused malfunctions and delays.

SYRIZA voted against the amendment, claiming that the plans will have a serious environmental impact and increase municipal taxes, while the privatization of waste collection will lead to mass lay offs. KKE also voted against the amendment, ANEL voted “present”, although MP P. Haikalis differentiated himself from his party by voting against it.
