According to statistics of the Maritime Employment Office, 27% of Greek sailors are out of a job. By the end of December 2012, there were 4,355 registered unemployed sailors, of an estimate active 16,000 sailors.
The data, which was presented to the Panhellenic Maritime Federation (PNO), also showed that unemployment affects officers as well. About 880 captains and 365 mechanics were unemployed in December.
Allied Shipbroking reports that in January alone Greek ship-owners invested 303.8 million dollars for the purchase of 26 ships. Their investments were mostly focused on bulk carriers, 19 of which were bought for about 207 million euros.
