Prosecutor Vasilis Chalntoupis is to decide today whether the 18 defendants accused of embezzling from the Municipality of Thessaloniki are guilty or not. The prosecutor will address the legal aspect of the case and, following an analysis of his thoughts, the prosecutor will issue a verdict of innocence or guilt.

Among the defendants are former mayor Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, former general secretary Michalis Lemousias and three former financial deputy mayors. About 70 witnesses testified in the case, which began last September.

So far on former treasurer Panagiotis Saxonis has admitted embezzlement, estimated at 51.4 million euros total. All other defendants have denied having anything to do with the white collar crime.
