The Ministry of Finances is lowering its expectations from collecting taxes from taxpayers who moved capital outside Greece which they cannot justify based on their in their tax statements.
The General Secretariat of Information Systems has so far sent 25,500 reminders to tax payers who were unable to justify deposits worth 7 billion euros. Those taxpayers were asked to submit further tax statements and pay a 45% tax on their hidden earnings. By Thursday though less that 1,000 taxpayers had responded and just 250 submitted further statements.
Original estimates of a swift 2 billion collection from taxpayers have not been confirmed, and sources from the Ministry of Finances estimate that the majority of the 25,500 taxpayers will manage to justify their deposits without paying any further tax.
